The project
Scope
A c.1860 sandstone home in Balmain, believed to be one of the oldest residences in the suburb. The property was originally constructed as a corner shop before being converted to a residence. The renovation covered extensive internal work: a new kitchen, all bathrooms gutted and rebuilt (two in total), a new deck and parking area, and a new front area with parking and an internal home lift.
Approach
Heritage sandstone of this age requires the builder to plan for the unknown. The original construction methods, the materials behind the walls, the services and structural interventions added over more than 150 years of occupation all influence what is actually possible in a renovation.
The project was managed closely with Joseph Grech Architects and the homeowners, with regular communication through what was a complex build on a constrained site.
Outcomes
A characterful period home brought up to contemporary standards without losing its heritage character. The owners gained modern, functional living spaces and improved flow, while the street-facing sandstone facade remains true to the home’s 1860s origins.
