The work
Canstruct Builders takes on residential renovations, extensions and architecturally designed new homes across the Byron Shire.
Most of the work is on existing homes: substantial renovations to older houses, first floor and rear additions, and the kind of project where the design intent matters as much as the build itself.
The clients tend to be people building for the long term. People building once, or building for the next chapter of family life. Architects and designers we have worked with before, who know how the projects we deliver actually run. The work spans Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads, Ocean Shores, Byron Bay, Bangalow, Lennox Head, New Brighton and South Golden Beach, with select work across the broader Northern Rivers and ongoing projects in Sydney where existing clients call us back.
From Sydney to Mullumbimby
Canstruct has its earliest roots in custom residential construction in Canada in the early 2000s. The business was established in Australia in 2006, and the first decade here was spent in Sydney.
Jason trained with master builders in Forest Lodge. The work that followed was heritage terrace and period home renovation across the inner suburbs, working with architects on projects that demanded careful detailing and a steady hand. The business found a particular niche in carpentry, structural timber framing and concrete form work between 2004 and 2014, which informed the way Canstruct still approaches existing buildings: understand the structure first, plan around what is actually there.
In 2022 the business relocated to Mullumbimby. Jason had been bringing his kids to the area for years, knew the region well, and saw a place where the kind of work Canstruct does in Sydney was needed locally. The Sydney operation continues for select clients. The Northern Rivers is now the focus.
What has not changed is the kind of project Canstruct takes on. Heritage homes, beach houses, renovations to older homes, architecturally designed new builds and the occasional remedial job that needs a builder rather than a specialist contractor. Different building stock, same discipline.
How we approach a Project
Every project starts with the client and understanding their motivations for building, what it is they are trying to achieve. The brief, the site, the design, the budget. Sometimes there is an architect already engaged. Sometimes the project has not been drawn yet. Sometimes the client has a clear idea of what they want, and sometimes they are still working that out.
The job of the builder, at the start, is to listen properly. Understand what the project is, what it is meant to do for the people living in it, what is known and what is not. Then to bring practical experience to the table without overriding the design. Where there are buildability questions, raise them constructively. Where there are cost implications, surface them early.
During the build, the principles are the same. Trades who know what they are doing. Real attention to detail. Open communication with the client and the architect throughout. Documents that mean something. Decisions made on the page rather than on the fly.
The work tends to speak for itself once it is done. The conversation along the way is what gets it there.
Credentials
Canstruct Builders is a Master Builders Association member, twelve years and counting. NSW Builder Licence 273034C. Projects have been published in Houses Magazine, December 2024 (Tree House, Lilyfield, with Retallack Thompson) and Kitchen & Bathroom Quarterly, Issue 24 Volume 3 (Ridge 3, Surry Hills, with Ken Powell Architect).

Recent and ongoing partnerships include Retallack Thompson (Sydney), Ken Powell Architect, Joseph Grech Architects, Oikos Architects, Kough Design, Barefoot Building Design and Houseplans by Design. Current Northern Rivers projects are underway with Lea Design and Design+Drafting.
